One of Hawaii’s hot spots just got a whole lot hotter, literally. Over the weekend the Kilauea volcano on the Big Island spewed volcanic lava a stunning 65-feet into the air. The volcano is located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and has been a popular tourist destination for adventurers and families for years. With multiple tours and camping nearby. And although the volcano has been erupting since 1983, over the weekend it took to new heights.
“As a volcanogist, this is what we do. These are the moments we wait for,” the volcanogist Janet Babb said. “It is exciting to see an eruption begin particularly if you can see it from the very start.” But if you happen to be there, just as a tourist, would you think it would be “exciting” or more like terrifying?
The Volcanoes National Park will be closed for now, as well the campground. Would you risk taking your family near an active volcano on vacation? Or do you prefer lava free tones?
